PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

A central government scheme to put rooftop solar on one crore homes. Eligible households get up to ₹78,000 paid into their bank account and up to 300 units of electricity free every month.

The money

How much you get

Central Financial Assistance is fixed by system size. It is paid to you, not to us — by direct bank transfer after the system is commissioned.

System sizeCentral subsidyRoughly suits a monthly bill of
Up to 1 kW₹30,000Under ₹1,000
Up to 2 kW₹60,000₹1,000 – ₹2,000
3 kW to 10 kW₹78,000Above ₹2,000

₹78,000 is the ceiling. A 5 kW or 10 kW system receives the same amount as a 3 kW system — above 3 kW you are paying the full difference yourself, so oversizing rarely pays. Subsidy rates are set by the government and can change; we confirm the current figure before you commit.

One crore rooftops

The subsidy lands in your bank account, not ours.

Up to ₹78,000 by direct transfer, plus up to 300 units of free electricity a month for households that qualify.

Eligibility

Four conditions, all of them required

Indian citizen

The applicant must be an Indian citizen.

You own the roof

The roof must belong to the applicant. Rented homes do not qualify.

A valid connection

A live, legal electricity connection in the applicant’s name.

No previous subsidy

You must not have claimed a rooftop solar subsidy before.

Paperwork

Five documents. That is the whole list.

Keep these ready and the application takes one sitting. Photographs from your phone are fine for the roof.

What we handle for you

Once you have registered, the rest of the process sits with us:

Timeline

From application to subsidy

You register once. Everything after that is ours to chase.

Energy flow from panels to the grid

Register at pmsuryaghar.gov.in

Create an account with your electricity consumer number and submit the rooftop solar application. If you would prefer not to do this alone, we will sit with you and complete it.

Day 1

Site visit and quotation

We measure the usable roof, check shading through the day, inspect the meter board and hand you a written quotation with the system size, the subsidy and your net cost.

Within 48 hours

Installation

Work begins on a 30% advance. Mounting structure, modules, inverter, earthing and cabling — completed within seven days.

7 days

Net meter and subsidy credit

MSEDCL installs the net meter after inspection. The subsidy claim is then filed through the portal and the amount is credited directly to your bank account.

Usually within 30 days of the net meter

Questions

What people ask us

After commissioning and net meter installation, the claim is submitted through the national portal. The amount is credited by DBT into the beneficiary’s bank account, normally within about 30 days.

To you. It is paid directly into the bank account you registered on the portal. We never receive it on your behalf, which is why the bank passbook or cancelled cheque is part of the document list.

Yes. We can arrange EMI through partner lenders, and several banks offer loans specifically for rooftop solar under this scheme. We will show you the options with the quotation.

The scheme requires the roof and the connection to be in the applicant’s own name, so a rented home does not qualify. If you own another property, that one may be eligible.

No. The subsidy stops at ₹78,000, so every kilowatt above 3 kW is paid entirely by you. We size the system to your actual consumption, not to the largest thing that fits on the roof.

It is a government programme with a defined target and budget. We do not know when it will close or whether the rates will change, and we would rather not tell you otherwise. If you are considering it, apply while the current terms are available.
